So, you’re looking to start bike commuting. A great decision that will save you money on gas, help you get in better shape, and let you feel your best throughout the workday. One thing you may be wondering as you start to commute is what type of bike you should be using. You’d like to use your sleek, fast road bike, but you’re worried about carrying all your stuff, as well as taking that nice bike out on the rough rounds of bike commuting.

Well, it turns road bikes can be a great tool for commuting. In fact, if you’re traveling long distances, they can help get you there much faster. The problem become carrying your stuff, as you’re unlikely to want to attach panniers to your road bike. As it turns out, you have a couple options.

Firstly, try to leave us much stuff at work as you can. If you can leave a toiletries kit, a small towel, your dress shoes, or anything other similar item stashed away somewhere in your office, thats that that much less weight you have to carry with you when you’re riding.

Secondly, try getting a good small backpack or messenger bag to carry your stuff in. The smaller and more well ventilated, the better. Just make sure its big enough to fit your stuff. Now, you might be wondering if a bag like this will make you sweat more. It probably will, but who really cares? If you’re wearing a proper cycling jersey, you should do OK. You’ll definitely be enjoying the speed increase of riding on your fast, snappy road bike rather than on a clunky mountain bike more than you’ll be hating the small weight on your back, thats for sure. Give it a try sometime, you might just find you like it.
